The process and the work become the same. The process involves moving between the environment and the studio. In the environment, I travel, walk, ask questions, research, collect, document, and rearrange using installation, audio, and other media, etc. The actions, interventions, and installations are documented and then left to become ruin, which, when seen at various intervals define their own creation-time, and visually reference their original state. Many pieces are revisited and recorded again – the process repeats over time.
In the studio, a second form of physical memory takes place using combinations of documentation, drawing, photography, audio, collections, and various forms of mixed media layered in rhythms, morphing in and out of each other. The studio work is the final result, or the physical heap leftover at the end, reflecting the art making process.
Brad Birchett is a mixed and intermedia artist who lives and works in Richmond, Virginia. His work investigates time through collecting, moving, making, and displacing objects as connected to physical movement.
Brad has exhibited at national venues such as the Myers Gallery in Tulsa, Oklahoma; Prescott College Gallery in Prescott, Arizona; aljira in Newark, New Jersey; Bowery Gallery in New York, Delicious Spectacle Gallery in Washington D.C.; and The Center for Book Arts in New York. His work has also been exhibited at international venues such as Philara Gallery in Düsseldorf Germany, Crou’n Haitai Gallery in Seoul Korea, and Imagine Gallery in Bejing China. Brad's essay , Assessing the Process, was published in Integrative Teaching International’s magazine, Future Forward: Foundations NOW.
Brad has curated a few exhibitions including Richard Carlyon: A Retrospective – Interval, for 1708 Gallery. Brad is an Instructor and Master Advisor for VCU School of the Arts in Richmond, Virginia.
