This past October, I was in the backseat of the car with my headphones in. My parents and I were driving 7 hours to Pittsburgh, PA for my grandmother's funeral. Phyllis Jean Sabo was 90 years old, an eccentric character just like me - absolutely crazy about kittens and ambrosia salads. She died from Covid-19 - the first death of dozens in her nursing home. And while the car ride to her funeral was grim and pensive, the thumping sounds of hyper pop music I was blasting in my ears took me to a sugary fantasy land. I was dreaming of how different this year was supposed to turn out - dancing in Miami clubs, blasting music in the car on the way to the beach with your besties, dressing up into something fun and slutty for Halloween. My ah-ha moment for these works happened exactly in that moment. I ripped out my headphones and blurted out the plan to my grieving parents - “I’m going to do a series that’s about having fun. There will be girls in cars and they will be on their way to somewhere really cute and stupid, and everything is OK where they are.”

Kevin Sabo is a painter (b. 1992) in Virginia Beach, VA (USA) and currently based in Richmond, VA (USA). He trained and studied art throughout his youth and graduated with a BFA in Studio Art from James Madison University in 2015. His paintings are typically multi-media - acrylic, ink, spray, collage work that is largely based around the figure, often playing with character and fashion. Themes of queer identity, satire, existential revelations can be spotted throughout his expressive work. Sabo describes his paintings as large sketches, as they are never pre-determined ahead of the end result.
