METABOLISM

jEANIE kEYS

MARCH 14 - MAY 12

Metabolism embodies the concept of constant change and transformation in a tightly regulated process to maintain life.

This body of work is an attempt to express the emotions around the process of and the significance of each material object we hold onto. I explore the importance each piece holds as a memory, as family history, as cultural meaning including the beauty and status of and how it was used and by whom.

I work with vulnerable materials easily destroyed. I sew the pieces together as a method of constant repair. I explore the table setting and the use or nonuse……the Hungarian folk symbols…the use of animal motifs as sculptural folklore…the conditioned female roles generationally…..all stored in my body of memories from childhood emotionally and the china cabinet physically. The collaged paper shapes symbolize the journeys from home to home. The sewing also reflects a map charting migration routes.

Dismantling the formality of conditioned habits and thinking, I explore the emotional weight of keeping precious material objects as a valuable action and expectation generation to generation.
