Pan Pastel Drawing Workshop with Pam Black

  • Quirk Gallery Charlottesville 499 W Main St Charlottesville, Virginia, 22903 United States (map)

Focus: Participants will be working from black and white photographs composing tonal representations on primed board. There will be a discussion about the elements and principles of design, an introduction to the medium/supplies and a demonstration. One-on-one instruction will follow. Participants may bring their own photo or choose from photos provided. Photos with figures or animals are ideal.

Process: 1) apply Pan Pastel using an applicator

2) wipe down to soften tones and blur edges

3) erase to define lighter tones and sharpen edges

These steps are repeated until desired effect is achieved.

The inspiration behind this workshop: “While I was teaching drawing at the School of Architecture at The University of Virginia, I hosted a visiting artist, Damien Shen, from Australia. He taught a three-week course on drawing with Pan Pastels. Pan Pastels is a medium that is appropriate for all levels of artistic experience. It’s a handy and efficient medium for creating quick studies as well as extended drawings. It’s a forgiving medium that can be worked and reworked and it is applied like paint with a soft applicator. Rendering with Pan Pastels can produce painterly results or crisp shapes when modified with an eraser.” - Pam Black

The workshop lasts 3 hours, beginning at 1 pm and ending at 4 pm.

Quirk Gallery will be offering complimentary sparkling wine to participants 21+.

Participants under 18 must be accompanied by an adult.

Tickets are $50 each plus Eventbrite fees.
