Landscape Oil Painting Workshop with Anne Walker

  • Quirk Gallery Charlottesville 499 W Main ST Charlottesville, Virginia, 22903 United States (map)

Join us in the gallery for an in-depth introduction to oil painting led by Richmond-based artist, Anne Walker.

What to expect:

Whether you’re new to oil painting or picking it back up, Anne will take through all the basics of painting, covering the concepts of shape, form, and line. She will lead you through preparing your canvas and show you how to set up your palette. After a lesson in mixing color, Anne will begin the class with a simple still life exercise to get those creative juices flowing. In that 20-minute exercise, participants will practice on 5 x 7 cardboard canvases.

We then move onto our main attraction, the mountain landscape! Participants will apply the lessons they just learned and paint their own mountain landscape. Raise your horizon to create an expansive field or lower your horizon to focus on your purple mountain majesty. The choice is yours and no two landscapes will be the same. Participants will leave with their practice still life and an 8 x 10 inch landscape painting. All supplies and instruction are included. Participants have the option of bringing their own brushes and paint, if desired.

The workshop lasts 3 hours, beginning at 1 pm and ending at 4 pm.

Quirk Gallery will be offering complimentary sparkling wine to participants 21+.

Participants under 18 must be accompanied by an adult.

Please note that paint will stain clothing.

Tickets are $65 each plus Eventbrite fees.

About Anne Walker:

Anne Walker was born and raised in Lawrenceville, Virginia. She attended the University of Virginia where she majored in Art History. After graduating, Anne married, moved to Cincinnati, Ohio and continued her studies at Xavier University. There, she received certification to teach art in grades K-12. She went on to teach elementary school art in Ohio, Tennessee and Virginia. In 1988, following the birth of her second son, Anne retired from the classroom. She purchased a kiln, set up a studio in her home and started a pottery business. For the next ten years Anne created and sold brightly colored functional pottery.

In 2000 everything changed for Anne when she took her first oil painting class at the VMFA Studio School. Since then, oil painting has been her passion. Anne believes that painting has changed the way that she views the world. She states that her art history background taught her how to look at paintings, but her oil painting experience has taught her how to look at the world. Anne paints from observation, trying to recreate a moment that has for some reason caught her attention. Perhaps she is excited by the negative space or the contrasting colors, the lights and the darks, a repeated pattern or an unusual composition. Anne typically creates larger paintings from small sketches or photos that she has taken. Anne uses color intuitively and adventurously as she strives to create exciting and dynamic paintings. Each summer for the past eighteen years Anne has painted and found inspiration at Nimrod Hall in Bath County Virginia. She now teaches oil painting to adults at Nimrod and in Richmond. Anne has volunteered as a Docent at the Virginia Museum of Fine Art for the past decade which has built on her love of art history and further developed her skill as a painter. Anne’s work has been exhibited all over Virginia and is in many private and corporate collections.
