OPENING RECEPTION: NO MAN'S LAND

  • 207 W Broad St Richmond, VA 23220 United States (map)

Quirk Gallery Richmond is pleased to present No Man’s Land, a solo exhibition of new work by artist Sharon Shapiro, opening on January 11, 2024 from at 5pm.

No Man’s Land explores the intricacies of female identity and the multi-faceted experience of growing up in the American South. Shapiro examines the profound impact of this culture on female pleasure and leisure, exploring nostalgia, memory, and girlhood. The installation will be an expansive mixed-media display filling the Main Gallery on Broad Street and Quirk’s subterranean Pink Gallery. Using her collage imagery, Shapiro has created black and white wallpaper that will hang behind large-scale works on canvas and panels. The scale and materiality of the wallpaper envelops visitors, inviting embodied viewing within and outside of the picture frame. Dominated by vivid hues, airbrushed graffiti, and neon colors, her palette is a potent vessel of meaning. Hot pinks and reds embody content concerning femininity and feminism. These colors also invite Shapiro to address the climate crisis, referencing deep red weather maps, raging forest fires, and record-setting heat waves. Her complex and layered representations of women call into question the systems that aren’t working.
