Interplay

Quirk Gallery, renowned for its commitment to presenting unexpected exhibitions of contemporary artwork, is delighted to announce "Interplay," a solo exhibition featuring the captivating works of mixed media artist Frankie Slaughter. This exhibition, marking Quirk Gallery's first of 2024, will be on display from January 25 to March 31, 2024, at Quirk Gallery in Charlottesville. An opening reception on January 25 from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM will provide an opportunity for art enthusiasts and the community to engage with Slaughter's dynamic creations. Slaughter will be returning to the Charlottesville location on Friday, March 1 for an artist talk beginning promptly at 6 PM.

"Interplay" is a celebration of the interplay of line, form, and texture, showcasing Slaughter's intuitive, immediate, and bold approach to various mediums, including paint, clay, and textile. The exhibition features an array of intensely colorful paintings, smaller ceramic panels, and a standout 15 x 10-foot monochromatic textile titled "Pathways to Understanding." This textile serves as a three-dimensional expression of the playful exploration and moments of convergence found throughout the exhibit.

Slaughter's work embraces collage principles, incorporating layering, overlapping, and the intersection of line and form. The collection invites viewers to experience the history of making, the role of chance, and the joy of discovery. In the artist's own words, "My work is about being in the moment, about how form finds surface and then shifts, about the now that lives in every application of paint, wax, clay, and in the sheer presence of color."

Frankie Slaughter

Frankie Slaughter is a mixed media artist who works with a variety of materials including paint, encaustic, textile, paper, and porcelain. Frankie's art has been featured in numerous publications, in addition to being acquired for private and corporate collections, and has been shown at galleries, juried venues, and boutiques throughout the country and in Asia.

She is a Virginia native, and since 2010, after nearly twelve years living in Hong Kong, she now works and resides in Richmond, Virginia. Her experiences abroad continue to influence her work today. 

Named one of "Richmond Style Weekly’s 2015 Women in the Arts Honoree," Frankie has served as a juror and advisor for a number of community events and has participated as a mentor and visiting instructor for various universities, local schools, and non-profit organizations. Her decades-long career also included designing one-of-a-kind jackets and accessories, and she continues to design unique and eclectic necklaces, which can be found at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts.
